Modus operandi of the Scam
Scammers often initiate contact on social media platforms, dating apps, or even through random WhatsApp messages, appearing friendly and genuine to build a sense of trust Once the target feels comfortable, the scammer may request a video call, either as a means of “verification” or to simply establish a personal connection. During this video call, they may secretly record the interaction, or, in some cases, manipulate the victim into engaging in compromising behaviour or in some cases there is a girl on the video call making obscene gestures and the scammers record this conversation. Scammers further make use of software for editing and morphing the videos, making it appear as though the victim was involved in inappropriate or embarrassing activities thus showing the targeted person in a compromising position with the girl.
Now the blackmailing starts and the scammer then contacts the victim, threatening to send the manipulated video to family members, friends, colleagues, or even post it online unless a ransom amount is paid. Further the scammer also shares the screenshots of contacts or proof of the video’s authenticity to intimidate the victim further. The information regarding the contacts/personal info is easily accessed by the scammers through social media apps.
Why This Scam is So Effective
Blackmail scams can be particularly distressing due to the highly personal nature of the threat and the social stigma involved. Fear of embarrassment and damage to personal relationships often makes individuals feel they have no choice but to comply. Moreover, the stigma attached to such situations often prevents victims from seeking help, making them more vulnerable to continued demands from the scammers.
What can be done to avoid falling in this trap?
The one golden rule to protect yourself is that when an unknown person requests a video call, be wary. Never engage in video calls with strangers, especially on platforms where your personal information might be visible. Never ever share your personal information with strangers and don’t make public access to your social media accounts. Even in a seemingly innocent conversation, be cautious not to engage in activities or share images that could be used against you.
If you find yourself the victim of such a scam, the most important thing is to never ever try to negotiate with the blackmailer. Paying them often leads to continued extortion, as they may realise you’re willing to pay to avoid exposure. Report the scammer’s profile and block them on the platform immediately. Additionally, consider filing a complaint with the cybercrime authorities.
